New Technology Brings Better Communication for the Deaf
There are several new technologies available today that bring better communication for the deaf. There are devices that allow deaf people to watch televisions and listen to the vibrations from music videos, and to communicate with other deaf and speaking people.
New Technology
There are deaf alarm clocks that are hooked up to a strobe light or a bed or pillow vibrator, deaf videophones that are telephones with video screens that use ASL and come with video phone directories. There is also a personal frequency modulator system. This system starts with a signal from a radio station like system that allows voice to be picked up by FM microphones, and then the signal is transferred to a receiver worn by the deaf student.
The next device is an Infrared System, this is an internal microphone that transmits a TV signal to a receiver worn by a deaf student and they are able to adjust the volume on their end and hear the TV. The next item is the Induction loop System, where a thin wire is placed around the deaf students listening environment and amplifiers and microphones are placed around the wire. The magnetic energy field causes amplified sound to be transferred to the hearing aid.
There is also a new technology called a One to One Communication, this is where the deaf person issues a microphone to the speaker and once they speak the sound is amplified and sent to the hearing aid. Another device is the video remote interpreter that works with a laptop, webcam and video conferencing equipment. The sign language or typing is converted to speaking words.
There are so many new technologies out there to assist the hearing impaired, and there are new devices still being created. The new era of mobile devices will soon be a common thing for the deaf as well, with new mobile devices being created to accommodate sound and allow a deaf person to communicate with speaking individuals.
