Developing Deaf Radio

Though at first it might seem like an oxymoron, deaf radio may indeed be entering cars for the first time, finally giving deaf and hearing impaired individuals the similarly entertaining commute millions of auto-travelers take for granted every morning and rush hour. Though television has been available to those hard of hearing for some time, the radio medium has been largely off limits as a result of the almost entirely auditory nature of the broadcasts. Just like television offers optional caption viewing, this new development may allow for an auxiliary radio screens to display text that corresponds with radio play. A Win for the Deaf Community

While no major referendums with repercussions for the hearing impaired were on the ballot as voters headed to the polls on November 2nd for midterm elections, that’s not to say the community didn’t have reason to celebrate on November 3rd. The South Dakota gubernatorial race may not made national news for its influence on global politics, after all, South Dakota isn’t the most populous state, nor does it home to much controversy, however, for at least one day the deaf community can look to Sioux Falls for inspiration.Dennis Daugaard does not suffer from restricted hearing himself, but comes from a deaf home. A true tribute to the well-rounded competence of deaf parenting, Daugaard’s success serves as a beacon of hope to CODAs, or Children of Deaf Adults, as obviously there are no limits to the values and discipline that can still be imparted on kids, regardless of communication method. A More Digital Deaf Community

Though early November is typically a time of political turnover, developments within the past month have no doubt put a smile on the faces of individuals in not only the deaf community but the blind community as well. Regardless of how one feels about Obama’s politics, the 44th President certainly took strides to reach out to millions of Americans who have suffered from hearing and or vision loss by signing into law new legislation that ensures equal technological opportunity, regardless of physical limitations.
